Maya’s Christmas dance recital

17 Jan

Maya started dance this year. She is doing “Triple Threat” where she does ballet for a few months, jazz for a few months, then finishes off the year with tap. She is really enjoying her dance class, so that makes me happy.

I guess at the end of each session, there is a recital so they can show off what they’ve learned the past few months. We were able to take photos at their dress rehearsal a couple of weeks before the show, since you can’t take photos at the theatre. She looked really cute and she did such a good job, we are proud of her!

Birthday season…

12 Jan

For us in our home, December and January are the major birthday months. Of course it means lots of planning ahead, especially to make it through Christmas and multiple birthdays. I started looking up ideas for birthday stuff back in October I think and decided on which cake I wanted to make for Rylan’s birthday, but I couldn’t decide on what to make for Maya’s cake. Thank goodness for Pinterest – it’s so good, yet so bad!

Sorry about the terrible pictures – you get the gist anyway. The cake was delicious! Strawberry 3 layer cake with whipped strawberry buttercream. Everyone enjoyed it!

I also made banana pudding parfaits and pull-apart pizza bites. For the favours, sugar cookies with royal icing and a pink candy melt “5” on it.┬áThere was a lovely pink party punch for the drink, and MY favourite – striped paper straws!

I also made a pinata, but forgot to take a photo of it. I’m pretty sure that was Maya’s FAVOURITE part!

I can’t believe Maya is 5 now and will be going to kindergarten in the fall! Happy Birthday Maya!

Little model

20 Oct

Ha ha, one day Maya decided to turn the pants she was wearing into a twisted “scarf”. It actually looked kind of neat so I snapped a few photos. Maya really likes to twist things around no matter if it’s her pants, her hair, dental floss around a handle, you get the idea!

First day of preschool

20 Oct

Yes, yes I know this is very late as Maya started preschool about a month and a half ago. I was kind of excited for her to go to preschool because I knew she would love it. After meeting her teacher at the open house earlier this year, I felt confident Maya would have a great time because her teacher is fantastic!

When she first started, the class was only an hour long, then they increased it to two hours, then finally after almost a month, the full two and a half hours. Let me tell you, it’s not a lot of time, especially when you’ve got two other kids to manage during this time. Her preschool isn’t near where we live, so going home and coming back isn’t a very good option. I looked nearby for a Strong start program because it’s free and drop-in and Rylan definitely could use it! Gavin I just keep wrapped up in my wrap and he generally sleeps most of the time.

I really wanted to make Maya a toddler sized backpack for preschool so I looked up on the internet for a tutorial to make one. I did purchase a PDF pattern to make it from. The fun part was then finding the perfect fabric for it. I had such a hard time deciding, but came up with this (it’s a Japanese fabric from superbuzzy.com) and it’s “Swedish school kids”. I also ordered this one in blue too because I wasn’t sure if the pink would be enough fabric to make this out of. I laid out all the pattern pieces prior to cutting out and they fit! I was excited because now I can make another backpack for Rylan! It turned out as well as I could have hoped, not too difficult. The tricky part was finding all the parts to go with it – the piping, (which I would probably just make myself next time), the webbing, the adjustable clips and a matching zipper. I ordered everything online and had to contain myself until it arrived. Since I really wasn’t getting out much at this point, it made everything easier to just order it all. I took the liberty of ordering other fabric while I was at it, so eventually I will get around to making things with those too!

As time goes by…

Maya’s new hair

7 Mar

Just about a week and a half ago, I decided Maya really needed a haircut. I was tired of her hair always being in her face, no matter how many clips or ponytails were in it. When we went to the hairdresser, I asked her opinion of Maya’s hair and what she thought of my idea of giving Maya bangs. Let me tell you, I’m terrified of bangs. I’ve never had them and honestly, I’m pretty sure if I ever did get them they would drive me crazy! But, Maya’s hair tends to grow forward, so I figured what the heck, try it out. I also told her to cut off about 4 inches of hair. The hairdresser looked at me quizzically and said, “Are you sure you want that much off?” I told her Maya’s hair grows so fast, that it needed something drastic. I was very pleased with how it turned out and she’s been wearing her hair down with no clips or anything in it since!

The hairdresser layered the main part of her hair and also layered it around her face too.

Do you see what I mean about it being in her face and super long? I’m so glad we cut it!!

Ummm…what more can I say??

5 Sep

I wish I could say this happened because I was doing something wonderful, like cooking a delicious meal for my family or cleaning my house to make it spic-and-span, but this was the result of getting a new iPhone and playing around with it while my daughter took matters of entertainment into her own hands!
