Maya’s 3!

15 Jan

Well, the slew of birthdays is almost over! (only mine to come up next, but of course it’s the most important!) We were pretty low-key for Maya’s actual birthday, we just ordered pizza and that’s about it. She did open her presents in the morning and got some cool things. It’s really nice she’s old enough that I can play games with her and be creative with her. She likes that and it gives me an opportunity to do something with her when Rylan’s napping. She likes to help out too, with baking and folding laundry (ha ha, not that it happens very often!) and whatever else I can think of her to do. I keep thinking that the willingness to help out won’t last very long, so I need to take advantage of it while I can!

This year she’s come leaps and bounds in learning new skills. Her speech is quite good, even to other people. She really likes to draw and her favourite things right now to draw are suns (and embellished ones at that, complete with faces and hair and sun rays of course!). A big one has been potty training. Of course there are parts of this we’re still working on, but for the most part, she’s got it pretty down. She loves music and to dance and is hilarious when she recognizes her favourite songs. Her current spontaneous song is “Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer”. Christmas songs tend to hang around for a while in our house. She’s still in gymnastics and swimming. She LOVES swimming. She just began her class where she gets to go by herself, and she did really well. She’s certainly learning to be more independent, so it can be both a blessing and a challenge at times. ¬†She loves going to nursery and her leaders love having her there (which is good because it’s going to be another whole year before she leaves it!)

Opening presents

I actually got around to taking pictures while Maya was opening her presents on her birthday. I think they’re cute pictures and I like that there’s one of her and I because of course, I’m usually the one behind the camera!

Birthday time!

10 Jan

This year I decided to combine a party for both Maya and Rylan since their birthdays are only 12 days apart. It was definitely a good idea and we had a fun time! I had wanted to make them t-shirts for their ages and I’d like to do them every year, or at least something similar. They turned out really cute. I used iron-on transfer paper and actually designed the ¬†graphics in Word. I really wanted to do them in Photoshop, but I don’t really have that much practice doing graphic-type stuff in it; just manipulating and enhancing photos. It took me a little while to get them all right and the right sizes to fit on their shirts and everything, but I actually like how they turned out!

I also wanted to make sugar cookies for a favour for the party. (Really because I didn’t want to go and pick out all kinds of things for goody bags!) Plus I figured, who doesn’t like cookies? And I think it’s kind of fun to make and decorate cookies, even if you have to start doing them a few days ahead of time! So I kind of matched the design on their t-shirts and did Maya’s as a 3 and Rylan’s as a 1.

And last of all, I wanted to do a cake for each of them just because I don’t often make cakes throughout the year (it’s just too bad all our birthdays are clumped together). So I finally decided on making a castle cake for Maya and a black forest cake for Rylan. Is it sad that I want to do a cake for my birthday too? Side note – I came across this cake and immediately thought, “that looks amazing! That’s what I want to make for my birthday”. Never mind that it’s huge and I have no idea what I’d do with all the leftovers! I’m pretty sure everyone is tired of sweets and stuff by now! And we’re pretty much caked out!

The castle cake

I think everyone had a good time. We had some sandwiches and snacks, plus the cake and just visited with our friends. It was a great day! (And I’m glad I only had to worry about one party!)

Current read

4 Jan

Ok, it’s been a while since I’ve last blogged. It just gets away from me and then I feel like I have nothing to write about. I’m sure there is, I’m just too tired to write about it! Here comes another book; it’s an easy post! I actually already finished reading it, but it was really good. It was another John Grisham book, but it was a non-fiction instead called “The Innocent Man”.

Right now I’m actually re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I saw the movie back in November or maybe the beginning of December and I really enjoyed it. I thought I should re-familiarize myself with the book.

In my Christmas stocking I got a book called “Birds of Prey” by Wilbur Smith. I’ve never heard of it, but apparently it’s the first book in a series, so I’m looking forward to reading it.
